Updated Sun Nov 29th @ 12.30pm

Bridgend A 22  Newport A 28

Bridgend B 10  Newport B 12

An amazing morning's rugby. First it was amazing that the game could take place at all. Amazing that the weather was so good and that the pitches were in such excellent condition, Amazing that two such outstanding games of rugby were produced and finally two amazing results.

The A match could not have started more disasterously with a knock on straight from the kick off followed by poor backline scrum defence which saw the home team score a 2nd minute converted try,

With the home pack dwarfing ours and taking early control things looked bleak. However gradually we began to battle our way back into the game and began to put together some threatening back moves.

It wasn't long before Daniel Snelling, who has had a few health and injury problems over the last few weeks, was given the narrowest of outside gaps in his own half  and showed tremendous pace to streak over for our first try Carwyn Penny slotting the conversion.

With our forwards beginning to win more ball which was run at every opportunity it wasn't long before full back Sam Dinsdale timed his entry into the line perfectly to cross under the posts Carwyn converting.

Bridgend hit took advantage of some sloppy defence to score their second try which was not converted only for Daniel Snelling to leave defenders trailing once again for his second try , converted by Carwyn.

This made the half time score 12- 21 and the second period continued in similar vein with Bridgend's huge pack driving forward but being met by determined defence and our pack driving low to hold them or to win ball.

Eventually the sheer power of the home pack saw them score a 3rd unconverted try to make the score 17-21.

A long kick out of defence saw Sam Dinsdale collect the ball in his 22, leave three chasers grasping thin air before off loading to young winger Laurie Baldwin who flew over in the corner......it goes without saying that the metronomic Carwyn slotted his kick.

A huge forward effort by Bridgend was held out time after time before they eventually forced their way over to make the score 22-28.

There was no way we were going to let them score again as every Newport defender threw themselves into tackle and ruck/maul to keep them penned in their own half until the final whistle.

In a fine team performance where every boy gave 100% it would be unfair to single any players out but several boys were mentioned by the home coach as boys who should be appearing in East Wales colours later this season......we will see!

Meanwhile the B team also faced a big home pack and soon trailed by an early try which was soon equalised when young winger Oakley Mighton showed fantastic pace to leave the home defence for dead.

The game proved to be a fantastic tussle which mirrored the A game. Bridgend led 10-5 after another try only for winger Ethan Thomas, another who has been unwell over recent weeks, streaked over form 65 metres ( and then collapsed) for stand-in outside-half  Luke Williams, who has been impressing in the forwards for the A recently, to cap a fine performance with the match winning conversion.

As the B team were told before their game they should be looking to press claims for A places and all of them did so, most notably wingers Oakley and Ethan.....the home comments being"if they are your B wingers what are your A wingers like!", o/h Luke Williams, centre Griff Burchell( whose father James is another ex-NSRU player) s/h Morgan Edwards and forwards  Keir Basset and Jack Littlejohn.....though this again was a TEAM effort.

All four teams must be congratulated for the way they played the games  which was a credit to -11 Distict rugby. It is also indicative of the way that we are trying to play that ALL our tries were scored by wingers/full back.

ALL of the Newport squad should be proud of the fact that they are the FIRST to enjoy such success at Bridgend....well done all.

Updated Sun Nov 16th @ 1pm

South Powys 5  Newport 22

Yes it's unbelievable but true we DID play yesterday. Despite the terrible weather of the previous days the pitch was in superb condition and despite continuing heavy rain and wind both sides made every effort to play running rugby.

The home pack made us battle for possession throughout and their inside centre and full back in particular were a constant threat.

Nevertheless some neat interpassing in our half gave Sam Dinsdale his first opportunity to run and he used it to turn defenders inside out before streaking over in the corner to give us the lead.....unfortunately the combination of the wind and ankle length grass saw Carwyn have a rare missed conversion.

It wasn't long before our other winger James McCarthy took full advantage of some excellent approach work to show fine footwork and speed to increase our lead....this time the sheer strength of the wind saw the conversion look to be going over only for it to hit a brick wall of a gust and drop like a stone.

The home team began to cover our attempts to spread the ball and make sure our wingers were well covered. Carwyn Penny soon realised this and sold a great dummy and  then sidestepped clean through and over the line to give us a 15pt lead at half-time.

Despite conditions deteriorating both teams continued to play 15 man rugby and it was disappointing that several clear cut chances were wasted by a mixture of the poor conditions, individual errors and determined home defence.

Eventually No 8 Tom Rice who showed a welcome return to form sealed the match after an outrageous dummy saw him cross under the posts.....Carwyn didn't miss this one!

With all subs now on the pitch South Powys continued to battle away and it was fitting that their inside centre capped a fine individual performance to gain his side a well deserved try.

All the boys did well in trying circumstances but s/half Will Davidson had his best game to date Tom Rice's workrate was top class, Lennon continues to improve with every game and Max Roberts-Dallimore made a strong case for the hookers position with 4 consecutive strikes against the head.

With the weather still looking poor for the next few days the Bridgend game must be doubtful. The squad will be posted later and we will again give a few other boys a chance.

Updated Sun Nov 8th @ 4pm

Cardiff XV  25  Newport 19

With Cardiff playing two games on Sat against our cup opponents Pontypridd and ourselves they mixed and matched their teams and showed just how much strength in depth the biggest district in Wales possess.

Despite pre-match warnings about complacency these obviously fell on deaf ears as the home side tore into us from the start and after fully 10 minutes we had hardly touched the ball. We had also conceded two tries in that period and looked to be heading for a very heavy defeat.

A warning to that effect  to the boys after the second try seemed to stir them into action and we fared much better and gradually began to win some possession. Before long some superb interpassing in a very confined space saw centre Tom Wooler cross for a try converted by Carwyn.

Unfortunately we conceded a third try soon afterwards to trail 15-7 at the break.

We continued to do better in the second-half but some poor defence allowed the home team a 4th try which stretched their lead to 20-7.

Sam Dinsdale standing in at full back for Daniel Snelling then showed blistering pace and elusive running to bamboozle the defence for a superb individual try again converted by Carwyn to bring us back to 20-14 just one converted try away from the lead.

However a wild pass while we were attacking deep in the Cardiff half ended with them scoring their 5th and decisive try.

A second Dinsdale try which was almost a carbon copy of his first went unconverted to make the final score 25-19.

In a game in which we were really outplayed for large parts of the game what was most disappointing was the ease with which Cardiff won so much possession , kept it and also used it so well against a defence which allowed them far too much space. We also failed to spread the ball wide, all too often trying to go it alone or cutting back into the defence where we then lost possession.

Having said that it was to our credit that we did not give up in the face of the early Cardiff onslaught and managed to battle our way back into the game without ever really playing to our strengths.

Interestingly the other Cardiff side avenged an early season loss to Ponty by winning 10 nil.

Training this week is likely to be at Pill 5pm

Updated Sat 17th Oct @ 5pm

Rhymney Valley 0 Newport 35

Already without top scorer Daniel Snelling and No 8 Tom Rice who has been in great form a series of circumstances saw a strange looking team take the field.

As expected the home side were determined to avoid the same sort of result as in our earlier friendly. It was anything but friendly as both teams tore into each other from the start, Although much smaller than the home 8 the Newport pack won a lot of good quick possession but with another new centre partnership in place, determined defence and a greasy ball many scoring opportunities were missed.

Eventually a blindside break and well timed pass by livewire s/h Elliot Quigley put Sam Dinsdale clear and under the posts....needless to say Carwyn converted.

The second half saw some of our  late arrivals take the field but Rhymney continued to make us fight for every scrap of ball.

Eventually Sam added a second try, soon followed by James McCarthy and then Fraser Stroud who had proven an admirable No 8 replacement for Tom emerged from a maul on half way and left the defence trailing for a well deserved try ( something his dad Glenn would have loved to do when he played for NSRU in the 70's) .....Carwyn converting all of the tries.

Finally Carwyn received the ball on his own 10 metre line and bamboozled countless defenders for an amazing individual try which sealed a fine performance and generously allowed James McCarthy to slot the conversion via the cross bar.

Every single boy gave everything to the cause but none more so the Lennon who produced an outstanding 2nd row display and has obviously worked hard on his fitness.

The B team also had a much harder time against the home team this time.

Nevertheless they kept up their unbeaten record with a hard earned 19 - 7 win.

Again the key to their win was the teamwork they dieplayed with every boy working for the good of the team.

Newcomer Daniel Taylor had a fine game at scrum- half as did his partner Morgan John ..... young Rio Dyer continues to produce exciting tries, getting two today......and leaving some of the home team convinced that Daniel Snelling was playing for the B.....praise indeed! Fellow year 5 Jack Littlejohns scored the 3rd try with Daniel Taylor kicking two conversions.

Well done everyone.

We will now face Pontypridd at home in the next round

Upsdated Fri Oct 16th @ 5pm

Updated Tued Oct 13th @ 6pm

There will be A and B games on Saturday.

As there would not be room for many parents to travel on the coach we will consider having a second coach if there is enough demand.

We would suggest that parents of boys who also play for clubs who would like to travel by coach should let the following people know how many seats they need:

NHSOB    Glenn Stroud,          Caldicot   Geoff Rees,          St Josephs   Chris John,                           Machen   Carl/Richard Hicks,         Pill  Rhys Littlejohns

Please do this a s a p so that they can pass the numbers on

Any other parents can either e mail us (see above) or text Bob

We have been asked to pointout that two of the try scorers on Sat were in fact  Fraser Stroud and Sam Dinsdale......sorry boys.

We would also like to thank the parents who filled the coach for helping us raise most of the cost .

Updated Sat Oct 10th @ 6pm

Aberavon v Newport

With several A team regulars missing is game gave some of those B boys who have been playing so well a chance to impress.

A beautiful day and perfect conditions saw the team start in the usual manner with ball being won and moved quickly to the wings.

The home team battled away with great determination but had no answer to the pace right across the backline.

First half tries came from Tom Rice, James McCarthy (2) and livewire prop Rhys Sperring (2) with Carwyn Penny slotting all the conversions.

A host of changes were made at half-time and this coupled with some determined home defence saw no further scores until the last 10 minutes when year 5 wingers Laurie Baldwin and Oakley Mighten showed real pace to cross for debut tries. The final score came from Daniel Snelling who had been unwell after the coach trip and went on for the last 5 minutes in the centre who cut through a tiring defence to score under the posts.

While a win was very welcome, it was the manner in which it came that impressed with the team transferring what they have been working on in training into the game. Well done boys.

This performance will give the coaches a selection problem of the best possible kind for next week's cup match.

Finally, it was great to see the first players from St Julians HSOB minis( Laurie Baldwin) and Pill Minis (Jack Littlejohns) making an a appearance for a Newport Schools 1st XV....they should be the first of many.

TRAINING THURSDAY..... numbers may have to be limited due to the cup match on Sat....check later in the week.

Updated Sun Oct 4th @ 10am

Newport 12   Vale of Glamorgan  5

What a difference a week makes.....last week's game against Rhymney was played in perfect conditions with our team winning quick ball and running in tries form everywhere

This week's match was played in drizzle against much tougher opponents who dominated possession throughout the match and forced us into giving away countless penalties.

Despite having little ball to play with, once again we managed to move the ball quickly to Daniel who left the cover defence in his wake to score under the posts...Carwyn converting. This remained the only score of the first half.

In the first five minutes of the second half we had at least four clear cut opportunities to put our speedsters clear but each time a poor pass cost us dear.

Eventually the possession Vale continued to enjoy led to them scoring a well worked unconverted try to close the gap to two ponts.

Inaccuracy in attack continued to to stop us using what little ball came our way but finally Sam was put clear and from 40 metres out outpaced the defence to score our second try.

Despite a further onslaught from the visitors we held on to earn a rather unbelievable win.

While there obviously remains a lot of work to do on the contact area ....the whole team should be proud of their effort, with every boy leaving nothing on the pitch in one of the finest defensive displays seen.

Meanwhile the B team continued to carry on with a second successive win ....tries coming from Adam (who has made the most of his return to the squad) and young Rhys who showed blistering pace for his score.

Once again though it was the team effort that shone though for the B's several of whom are making strong cases for A places.

Well done all

Updated Fri Oct 2nd @ 10am

We have A and B fixtures against Vale of Glamorgan this Sat @ Caerleon RFC  10am ko

Boys should meet at the ground by 9.20 am

There will be food afterwards and we would like all boys to stay.

Due to the numbers attending training we may have to reduce the squad over the next few weeks. We don't like to do this but with fewer B games available against most of our upcoming opponents some boys will not have many opportunities to bid for A places. If any boys are affected we will monitor their performances for club/school and ask them to return to training or indeed any future B games.

Those parents who wish to order t/s + rainjackets please send along the money preferably by cheque made out to N S R U  ( in an envelope)

See you Saturday

Finally a (late) note of congratulations to ex-NSRU -11 player Ashley Smith who became the first of our former players to captain a Newport-Gwent Dragons side......who knows he might become our next international.

Updated Sun Sep 27th @ 9pm

Newport v Rhymney Valley

Another glorious day and two outstanding adverts for junior rugby.

Rhymney Valley have been one of our toughest opponents over the years and arrrived with some two big packs of forwards.

Our best option in both A and B appeared to be to move the ball around as much as possible and to their credit this is what both teams did.

The A team held a healthy lead at half-time but to Rhymney's great credit the second period was much harder and only some determined defence kept our line intact on several occasions.

In a game where the work put in on Thursday paid great dividends and our backs had too much pace for their opponents all the boys can feel satisfied with their efforts though there are still many areas for improvement.

"A" try scorers were Daniel (3) , Sam, Liam, Tom R and Carwyn  who also kicked 6 conversions.

The B team also produced a fine team performance...in fact one specator , one of our parents from a few seasons ago ,expressed the opinion that the B performance was more of a team one than the A.....an interesting observation and a very good one .

Once again, to their credit, Rhymney came back strongly in the second half to score two tries to finish on a high.

B scorers were James McCarthy (4), Laurie, Ethan (2), Iwan N and Rio with James kicking 4 conversions.

The big plus from the B match was the number of boys who pushed their claims for any A place.

Thanks to both referees for their handling of the matches, to those parents who helped out on the day and a big thank you to the boys for their efforts.

However we can expect a much tougher encounter at Bargoed in a few weeks when we play Rhymney in the Cup !

Most boys tried on tracksuits and rainjackets on Sat if you haven't done so they will be available on Thursday ....those who have decided on the size should pay by cheque made out to NSRU ( in an ENVELOPE please)

See you on Thursday........should have two games against Vale of Glam on Sat

Updated Thurs Sep 17th @ 9pm

Another good session..... boys are working hard to improve and to get a place in the 1st XV.

Unfortunately our opponents are unable to play this Saturday....let's hope last year doesn't repeat itself again when only 3 teams actually fulfilled fixtures.

We are a little concerned that boys do not do too much and end up being "burnt out" Please make sure boys have some rest time and are not constantly  physically active.

We do not expect boys to trainor play whilst injured and would prefer them to miss one of our sessions if they are exhausted.....they face a long season and we would like them to be in peak condition as much as possible.

The WRU has drawn up a calendar where schools and clubs are allocated weekends. On a school w/end boys who play on a Sat are not supposed to play on the Sunday as well and vice-versa.

We have a good relationship with our clubs and  only ask that parents and club coaches are sensible and do not allow boys to be over-played.

Next Thursday September 24th we will be holding a development day at Caerleon RFC. Boys will need to meet at 9.30 am and we will finish approx 5pm. Boys will need to bring plenty of water a (healthy)packed lunch and a snack for mid-afternoon ..... further details to follow.

Schools have been e mailed but if you have any problems with release please let us know and we will contact them.

Thanks to those parents who have helped with sponsorship ( please let us know of any likely contacts) and also with offers of assistance on match days.

Pontypridd v Newport

What a beautiful day to start our season with....certainly for spectators if hot work for the boys!

What was planned to be two fixtures had to be reduced to one of 3 periods due to problems with a second pitch, which meant some boys only had one period of play.

The first session saw a full strength and experience home side prove far to strong for our boys who struggled for possession against a big, well -drilled pack which provided a good -looking backline with plenty of possession.

Our boys certainly showed they were prepared to tackle and had plenty of opin the 1stportunities to do so . Ponty ended up winning the first period by 3 tries to 1 with a Daniel Snelling special getting us on the scoreboard.

Both  districts put out a " second" XV in the next period and although we prob had better of the possession, with the pack rucking much better than in the 1st session two breakaways gave the home side a 2 try to 1 win with Ben Hicks getting our score.

With the majority of our 1st squad returning and Ponty's not we were understandably too strong for their "shadow" side with tries coming at regular intervals from wingers James McCarthy(2) , Sam Dinsdale, O/h Carwyn Penny, centre Ethan Thomas and inevitably Daniel Snelling!

So a bit of an eye opener for those boys playing their first 15 a side game.......some found it more difficult than others and several of the "second" XV certainly pushed their claims for "A "places in next week's game....which was one the main objectives of the fixture. However every boy really tried their best and will benefit from the experience...well done all of you.

The coaches now also have a better idea of the areas work is needed on.

Thanks to Ponty for another enjoyable morning's rugby played in excellent spirit and refereed sympathetically and well  by both officials.

See you at training Thursday

NEWPORT SCHOOLS ARE GOING TO THE MILLENNIUM STADIUM !!!!! Newport 35 Cardiff 28 What a game, what a performance, what happened to our fingernails? Why do we have even more grey hairs? Cardiff turned up for the semi-final knowing that they have beaten us at the same stage 3 times in the last 5 years at least twice when we were probably the better team. We were missing 3 of our best players through injury/ unavailability but the team started like a train despite playing against the wind. Tries from Sam J and Luca V S both converted by Luca H gave us an early 14 point lead. Unfortunately a combination of errors on our part and good Cardiff play saw the scores tied before the visitors took a half-time 21-14 lead with a last minute converted try. We could have let our heads drop but again made a great start to the second period when first Arron powered his way over and then Luca V S turned defenders inside out for his second , Luca H converting both....28 -21. The battle for possession was brutal at times with both sides showing full commitment and tackling like their lives depended on it. Cardiff continued to press but another interception try from Lewis B , converted by Luca gave us a 14 point lead. We should have eased our way to the final whistle now but another Cardiff try made it 35-28 and with them only needing a draw to go through to the final the last few minutes seemed to last forever. Eventually the final whistle brought great relief to everyone and meant we will now play in our 3rd D C Thomas Cup Final against Vale of Glamorgan this Saturday. The B team tried their best but made too many errors against a strong Cardiff B , losing by 25pts to 5 but at least Harri had the last word by scoring a consolation try. WELL DONE EVERYONE So we now have to make the hurried arrangements for Saturday. The WHOLE SQUAD will be going to the match by coach and we will also arrange one for mums, dads, sisters long lost cousins etc, etc. Those boys who do not play on Saturday will receive a momento of the day at our presentation evening. We will need to know the numbers intending to go, at the moment these parents have provided the numbers they say will be travelling on the coach: Briden, Ellis, Sam J, Callum P, Will F G, Cameron, Luca V S, Harri L E, Lewis B, Ewan, Callum S, Dylan, Oli A, Zac, Lewis G, Harvey, Sam B, Matt,Arron , Edwin, Lewis A, If you are coming but have not yet reserved a seat/seats please let us know the number required by e mail or text a s a p. The coach will leave Newport , probably Pill , at 10.30 with the match kicking off at 1.10 pm, we will then return to Pill RFC at approx 4.30. We hope to have a squad photo on the pitch before the game We believe entry to the stadium is free but we will probably have to ask for a donation towards the cost of the second coach. Please check for further updates...there will NOT be any training session before the match. Oh yes a collection of kit was left in the changing room, 2 pairs of boots, one pair of trainers, a kooga overhead and a blue under jersey, we could open a store!!!! ........................................................................................................
