In Welsh we have been practising our conversations about last years' holiday ready for Mrs Irvine to assess us.
In our project work, we have been labelling famous rivers around the world on a mini map of Earth, which we had to draw to scale.
In English we have been learning about persuasive language. We used these skills by creating a leaflet about safety on a bike.
In science we have been investigating shadows. We conducted an experiment to measure the length of a shadow during a school day.
In ICT we have been working on a stopmotion animation video on the ipads.

In English we have been doing more persuasive writing using AFOREST. We have been learning how to make a balanced argument, showing both points of view.
During maths we've been working on our investigation booklets which contain various equations. We will be working on these booklets over the next week.
In project we have been studying how rivers meander and make oxbow lakes. After we finished this, Mrs Irvine set up an experiment to show the path of a river. We used a large piece of cardboard and a tray of sand to show how water goes down a steep mountain slope or a more gentle slope.
In welsh we have been pratising our holiday conversations because we are taping them next week.
Within ICT, we've been working on our stop motion animations (SMA). When we have added sound and credits, we will share them with the class.
In science we finished off our shadow investigation report. We found out that the shadow is shortest at midday because the sun is overhead and is longest in the early morning and later in the day when the sun is lower in the sky.

Week 13.5.13
Maths-
In maths we've been completeing our year 6 investigation booklets and recently we've completed a test.
In English we've been doing some more persuasive writing, this time in letter format. We had to write about an issue from a traditional tale or nursery rhyme.
In project we have focused on why ciries are biult near rivers and we had to choose a river to research. We thought about questions like population, employment, resources, leisure activities and industry and farming.
In science we have been identifying animal skeletons and we looked at the similarities and differences in human and ape skeletons. We thought about how changes had happened over time called evolution and how the skeleton adapted to the new needs of the human. We could see how animals had different features for different environments.
In welsh we have been reading a book about holidays called Gwyliau. We answered some comprehension questions and will be doing more work with it next week.

In english we have been continuing using persuasive techniques. We wrote letters about an issue of our choice to either our parents, Mr Williams, or the Prime Minister to persuade them to our point of view. We also applied these skills when we debated in teams of 3 between industrialists and conservationists about river pollution. We had to remember to use our persuasive techniques to make our arguments convincing.
In project we watched a DVD about how the Hoover dam was made. After that we wrote a chronological report about the Hoover dam and how it affected the people around it.
In welsh we were taped reading a welsh book and doing a comprehension on it. We have also started to learn a bit on future tense.
In maths we have been doing a maths booklet on how we do certain types of skils e.g. ratio and proportion problems, fractions of numbers, percentages of numbers and using graghs to interpret data.
We are looking forward to the fun run this afternoon. Please remember to bring in sponsorship forms after the half term.

w/b 3.6.13
In Welsh we have been writing a book review for 'Gwyliau'.To develop our speaking skills, we have been acting out a role play between a travel agent and customer, using familiar Welsh patterns. We will be taping them next week.
In art we have been looking at different paintings that include water and also at what techniques artists use to paint waterscapes. The artists we studied were Turner, Monet, Hockney, Cannaletto,Seurat, Whistler, Hokusai and Houston. We gave our opinions for each painting and learnt that art can be subjective. We also watched a video about how to paint a waterscape using water colours.
The homework for this week is to research an artist that we looked at in class and to produce an A4 sheet with a little information about the artist and a couple of examples of their work connected with water.
In project we have been continuing with our studies on rivers. We did a case study on Bangladesh, because its built on a delta of a river. We learnt that this area is prone to flooding because they have monsoons.
In English we have started reading a new class book called Why the Whales Came by Michael Morpurgo. In the story there is a character called The Birdman, who is mysterious and disliked by the other islanders, so we had to draw him using clues form the text and also write a poem about him. Today we completed a KWL chart on what we know about in the story so far and and thought of questions that we want to find out about.
In Maths we have been making a maths board game. We used games already in existence and then adapted them with our own ideas. Once they are finished we will take in in turns to play each others games and evaluate them.
W/B 10.6.13
As part of our continuing project work about rivers, we have been doing some research about bridges around the world. We chose a bridge to study and found information about its' height, location and materials used for construction. This is in preparation for our work next week where we will have to construct a model bridge. The homework this week is to research a bridge ( anywhere in the world) and produce an A4 piece of paper which displays the information found and some pictures.
After out trip to the Fourteen Locks Canal Centre, we wrote a report about the activities that we took part in. We wrote a detailed accout about the pond dipping, wildlife survey and tree identification. We were lucky enough to see lots of wildlife including Damsel Flies, Mallard Ducks, Moorhens, some British birds and even some very cute ducklings!
We have been continuing to read more of 'Why The Whales Came' which we are thorouhgly enjoying. We have found out more about the Birdman which has changed our feelings towards him. This week we wrote a diary enrty in the voice of Gracie, who had got into trouble after hiding wood found on the beach. We also used the story for inspiration to act out a freezeframe about a bullying scene.
Bassaleg Science Departement visited us on Tuesday to conduct a Science experiment using bottle rockets. In groups we had to build a rocket and then launched them to see which one went the highest.
In Art this term, we have been learning about Watercolours in preparation to paint a waterscape. We sketched a basic plan for out waterscapes, focussing on the compostion and relflection. We also learnt new art vocabulary such as blotting, beldding and stipling and techniques such as the wash and using dry-on-dry.

We have been continuing to read the book 'Why the Whales Came.' We have now learnt about the significance of the whales and have learnt that Gracie's dad has been killed in the war. We also discussed bullying and how it feels to be a victim. We then wrote a poem about how a bullying victim might feel and also looked at bullying from the perspective of the bully.
In Maths this week, we have been doing some work in the textbooks covering all aspects of Maths. We have also done our ALFIE tests on the computer, in which everyone did really well.
Follwing our Welsh work on gwyliau, we have been writing holiday postcards to our friends. We had to use the three tenses and patterns we already know to help us write the postcard.
In Art we have been painting our watercolour pictures (they were all very successful). We used our sketches to help us plan our paintings and then practised using the watercolout paints before undertaking our final piece. We found out that watercolour paints are quite hard to paint with but are very effective for painting waterscapes.
Carrying on with our Project work, we have been researching bridges from around the world on the ipads.
We have also listened to some more interesting presentations about topics such as The Titanic, James Cook, The Golden Gate Bridge and Sydney Bridge. Everone did well, speaking clearly and using a prezi or powerpoint presentation with a quiz at the end.
