w/b 6.1.14

On our first week back after Christmas we found out about our new project in English which is myths! We learnt the difference between myths, legends and fables and we had to colour code statements about them. We listened to different versions of the same Greek myth about Theseus and the Minotaur and identified differences and similarities between them. We are now working on our oracy skills because we have to practice retelling the myth with a partner to an audience.

In maths we have been rounding decimals to 2 and 3 decimal places and recapping shape work and negative numbers

In PE we continued choreographing our dance routines and we have begun rugby for outdoor games. If you don't have kit in school yet please remember to bring it next week. We need trainers and sweatshirts for outside.

In Science we made a timeline of ten famous scientists. If you like, find out more about one of them at home.

Our new project is called the big picture and is going to be about different periods in history. We will be starting with Ancient Greece. We need to create a timeline in the hall.

Remember for Welsh to find some information about a famous person ready for our descriptive work next week.

In English we have been learning more about Greek mythology. We wrote a letter as Theseus to King Aegeus, using the correct layout and an informal style. We practised our story telling by retelling the story of Theseus and The Minotaur. It was important to speak clearly and loudly and keep eye contact with the audience. Miss Phillips is recording these for evaluation.

In Maths we have been revisiting topics from last term to consolidate our learning and skills.

Project- we have begun learning about Greek gods and have made a title page for the big picture

R.E pilgrimage- places across the world. We researched what Pilgrims and Pilgrimage meant. Then we used a world map and found places of Christian pilgrimage.

P.E - We filmed our finished dances and played dodgeball inside because of the weather.

Science- we went over friction and designed an experiment with ramps and a toy car. We did this in groups and recorded results in a table.

In English we have been planning our myths all week. We created a hero and a mythical beast. We thought about creating a setting that would show it was Ancient Greece and then we filled in plans, which included a quest for the hero, problems to solve, help from the Gods or special powers and how the story would be resolved. We have also looked at using punctuation accurately. We made up group myths using cards and found it tricky to remember to include everything. Next week we are ready to write them.

In Maths we have done some 3d shape work, making nets and problem solving again.

On Monday some youth workers spent part of the afternoon with us, playing games to get to know us. We will be working on citizenship and being part of the community and we will do some transition work to help prepare us for Bassaleg. At the end of the sessions we will get a certificate.

So far we have made Tudor roses, some houses, Henry VIII and some of his wives, but there is plenty still to do.

Don't forget to start thinking about what your homework presentation will be about - any historical event, character, or time period that interests you. Remember there will be no reading out research - you will only be allowed a few memory joggers. Think about how you could make it intersting for your audience. We will start listening to them right through next half term.

First we researched the subject on the ipads to find out about their lives, then we read some additional information. We made notes which we then had to turn into a biography.

On Tuesday we had our Eisteddfod. We performed a short play and a rap about Harry Morgan, the pirate whose family lived in Tredegar House starring Meirion as Harry.
