Singing songs for our Christmas production is well underway. Please keep practising the words at home. Costumes can come in when you have them - we suggested jeans, check shirts or similar that would fit a 'Western' theme, little scarves and even a cowboy hat if you have one, but not at all essential.

We had a visitor this week called Rhys Bebb who came to talk to us about Sustainability. We had to think about different energy sources and some of the advantages and disadvantages of using different types. We had to think about cost, space needed, how much was produced and how long it would take to clear up after the life expectancy of the power source ran out. It made us think that making decisions about energy is complicated.
Week b 9th November
On Wednesday we went to Crucial crew which was a safety workshop. We went round in groups to meet different experts who told us how we could keep safe near railway tracks, around electricity, online, with food, near dogs and our personal safety when we are out with friends. We were allowed to have a go on the bouldering wall too.
In maths, both groups have been working on fractions and in English we finished reading the novel. We planned and wrote persuasive letters to Mr Wells to try to convince him to clean up his act. We needed to include rhetorical questions, emotive language, cause and effect connectives and evidence, making opinions sound like facts.
In IT we began work on our Sustainability project with a partner. We need to collaborate on Google slides. For Welsh we need to find out about a famous person so we can ask and answer questions about them with a partner.

Week b 2nd November
Welcome Back
Hope you all had a fab half term!
Maths
In Ms Luckwell's class we have been taking fractions down to their smallest form and putting numbers into decimals and fractions. In Mrs Irvine's class we've been converting improper fractions to mixed numbers and the other way round. We have also been simplifying fractions. Both classes have homework sheets this week.
English
We continued to read The Iron Woman and we planned a group drama, where Lucy, Hogarth, Mr Well's, the Iron Woman and the Iron man were interviewed by Petunia for a TV programme. We put together some questions and answers, then practised and performed our interviews. They have been videoed and then we evaluated our performances and gave ourselves a target for how we could improve.
Science
We made a graph of our results from the science investigation.
Project
We analysed the results of the Sustainability survey and did an art evaluation. In IT we were manipulating images of our own photo.
We began Bible Explorer about the Old Testament with a visitor called Amanda. She will be in each week for 5 weeks.

Week b 19.10.15
Maths
In Mrs Irvine's maths class we have been solving word problems,in Mrs Luckwell's we have beem doing long division and in Miss Philips we have been doing reasoning questions.
English - we have read some more of the Iron Woman novel and then we wrote a diary entry pretending to be Lucy, explaining the events in Chapter 3.
History - we wrote a newspaper report on the loch ness monster with Miss Phlilips and we finished our art topic looking at landscape by recreating one of David Hockney's paintings of a wood. After the paint had dried, we added collage leaves to make it look more effective.
Science - we did an investigation with 3 burning candles, weighing them at the start and then at 10 minute intervals. We found the candles kept losing weight. The next day the liquid wax had solidified again but the candles still weighed less. We concluded that the wax must have been burning as well as the wick of the candle and the wax became wax vapour. We could also see that burning wax is a reversible change.
We won the attendance certificate this week - Well done. We also got the cup for having most dragon stickers on the Welsh board - Da Iawn!
On Friday afternoon we had an internet safety talk by our Community Police Officer. We talked about cyber bullying and how to keep safe on line. Please remember to check all of your privacy settings when you get home.
Maths investigation booklets and flyers about the research homework have been sent home. Maths problems might take a few weeks to complete and you have 2 weeks to do the renewable energy research. Don't forget to keep up the reading!
Have a fun half term!

School Council
In school council we discussed about how many people go on the message board. This week we have had a post by 1M saying 'could we have somewhere to put our toys because when it comes to play with them they're all gone. We would like to have some more posts each week. If you post a message on the board you will get a certificate.
We have also been looking at classes attendence. We would like to get our attendance to 100% each week.
Please could you all try to get at least one message per class.
Thank you. Beth (School council rep.)

Week b/ 5:10:15
Literacy
This week in Literacy we have been planning and writing a report about our time at Hilston Park.
We named it the Hilston Park - Survival Guide.
When we started to plan the report we had to make short notes about the sub headings:
Rules, Routines, Activities, Buildings, Kit List and Equipment and Instructors. Once we had made the notes we then started to write our reports. Each report was about 6 pages long and had a small glossary!
Maths
In maths we have been doing grid and long multiplcation. In Miss Luckwell's group we have done long multiplication and ratio work.
Science
We drew diagrams to explain the changing state of matter, using water as our example, but we looked at other solids that could change to liquids on heating and return to solids on cooling, such as chocolate, candle wax and butter. We thought about reversible and non-reversible changes. Some things can't change back to their original state, like an egg once it has been cooked or bread once it is toast.
Project
Please complete our Sustainability survey in Google classroom so we can analyse the results next week. We sorted pictures of energy use into types of energy or how it was being used and thought about why we use more energy in the developed countries compared with the developing countries.
Welsh
Try to practise the questions and answers on the language pattern sheets that came home. We have been going over some past tense questions and answers this week.

Week 14.9.15
English
In English we read the Lion and Albert poem and the funny bit was when Zak had to go and perform it with Mrs Irvine because he performed it before at drama. Later on in the week we made little booklets for younger children to read to help them understand the poem.
Also this week we wrote an Autumn poem using metarphors.
Maths
In Mrs Irvine's maths class we were finding out different methods to multiply, some in our head and some on paper.
Science
We have been finding out more about the properties of solids, liquids and gases and finding examples all around us.We did some experiments to see or hear the effects of gases, like a mini volcanic explosion with sodium bicarbonate and vinegar.
7.9.15
This week we went into our maths groups and had to do our first Alfie test of the year. We have been working on place value and Friday maths was about Shapes.
In English we have been learning about different types of poems and have read some poems by famous poets like Walter de la Mare and Robert Louis Stephenson. We did the beat to 'Windy Nights' so it sounded like horses' hooves. We did poetry comprehension on two poems about trees and have written a fast poem with a pattern, using noun, adjectives, adverbs and verbs.
Our science work is called Curious change and is about changing materials. We had to classify cards into groups and say what they were about. We went outside to be particles in solids, liquids and gases and we have drawn diagrams.
In PE we are learning moves from the Haka and also played hockey.
Miss Phillips did some art about landscapes with us and we compared pictures by Vincent van Gogh and David Hockney. We also changed the images in our IT lesson. In history we are looking at evidence about mysteries from the past.

Week beginning 2.9.15
Hello! Welcome to our first class blog in 6I!Here are the events from the first week in Year 6.
To start in art on our first day we got to paint in a new style that we had never seen before!
It was the style of Jackson Pollock.
Some of the pictures we made are on display in the cloakroom and in our gallery on our webpage!
In Geography we have also been learning about continents and oceans. In our topic book we have
been writing a list of the above topics. We also used an atlas to
locate the countries in South America.
We haven't done much PE but we have played a short game of rounders in which the scores were
a draw, three all.
Finally we had a Hilston Park talk with Mrs Irvine. We asked some basic questions like whether you could take a device that
needs charging, in which the answer was no.
Thanks for reading! Alex and Tom
