Below is a table containing all the High Frequency words that we teach throughout the year in Year One. By the end of the Summer Term we hope that everyone will be able to read and write these words correctly. As many of these words cannot be sounded out phonetically (or using our froggy fingers) we sometimes call them ‘tricky words’. Once your child knows all the names of the letters in the alphabet he/she can learn these harder words by saying the name of the letters in them eg for 'the', your child should say 'tee aitch ee' several times each day until the word is learnt. There are some great magnetic fridge packs of Year 1 words available in such places as WHSmiths, WHAT! and BookWorks. Children can make up sentences, then copy them down—this way they’ll learn the irregular spellings without even knowing it!!
