Welcome to Year 6
Welcome back to school and to Year 6
Some information for the new term.
Our PE sessions take place on Tuesday mornings ( indoor) and Friday afternoons (Games -outdoor). Please have the right kit available in school for these sessions. If possible this should be a white or light coloured plain top and dark shorts or track suit bottoms. PE kits can stay in school.
Reading journals should come home with your child every day. When they have read, please encourage them to fill in their journal, sign it for them and return it to school. When they have completed a book, your child can then complete an activity in their journal, from the list in their books. It is really important that children keep up their daily reading in Year 6 to improve their comprehension and extend their vocabulary. The more that the children read, the better they'll get on in all areas of school life. Thank you for your help and support with this. Miss Phillips and I are very impressed with everyone's commitment so far!
The Hilston Park visit will take place in October and there will be a meeting in the following weeks to discuss the visit.
I will be having my P.P.A (planning, preparation and assessment time) on a Thursday afternoon, when Mrs Jones will be teaching the class.
Each week the children will write a blog to let you know what kind of activities have been taking place and we will put up the spelling lists, in case anybody misses them. New spellings are given on Fridays to be learnt for a test the following Friday. It is expected that the children will learn the spellings. We do an activity in school to consolidate the learning and differentiate to make sure the level is appropriate. Again, any problems, let me know.
Thank you.
Mrs. Irvine

Unfortunately, this week has been a tiring one! This week we have done a lot of interesting work.
Firstly in English,we finished reading our book called 'OG AND THE CUP OF GOOD FORTUNE'. We are now planning a story about him which has to include a prop ( a golden golf ball) and a setting that we have been given.
Secondly, in maths, we have been solving word problems using division and multiplication.

Week beginning 7th October
This week we had our last Bible Explorer lesson with Mrs Thomas. We have been finding out about the books and stories in the Old Testament and have been given a certificate to say we have completed the course.
During Science this week we have been investigating thermal insulators and we had to plan and design an investigation to test which materials were more or less effective. We used 6 cups from McDonalds and covered them with different materials. We added hot water and took the temperature every 3 minutes to see how quickly the liquid cooled. We recorded the results in a table and then made a graph of our findings.
Because October is Black History month, we have been finding out about different inventors this week. We picked out an inventor then had to research him or her to find out what they invented and why their invention was important. We shared our findings with each other at the end of the week.

In Science this week we have been learning about buoyancy and why some things sink and others float. We found out that some balls float, like beach balls and basket balls, but a bowling ball and a golf ball sink. It depends on the density of the ball and the amount of water it displaces. Our challenge was to make a golf ball size lump of clay float. This was tricky! We had to keep trying. Most people weren't successful, but one ball floated. We hollowed out the clay to make it less dense and increase the surface area, but sometimes air could still escape. It was all a bit messy!
We have been writing poetry this week. We wrote a class poem using a frame and then had a go ourselves.
Our trip to Aberthaw was very interesting and we were surprised at how big a Power station was. We found out why they needed to be built by the sea and what different processes were needed to make electricity. We had a workshop in the afternoon where we generated energy on a rowing machine and tried to come up with the best mix of energy solutions for the future.
In PE we are now doing dance and mini hockey and Mrs Jones is doing art and music. We are working on silhouette pictures so we have been finding out about them.
Parents evenings next week so you can see some of the work we have been doing.
